A Little Bible Study

Luke 22:1-30

Preparing the Passover

22 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching. 2 The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put Him to death; for they were afraid of the people [who listened devotedly to His teaching, and who respected His spiritual wisdom].

Fear makes you do crazy things. These men led the people by fear. Leadership based on control and fear is insecure leadership. I thought that these religious leaders were all about the Ten Commandments! Fear can totally twist one’s thinking.

3 Then Satan entered Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve [disciples]. 4 And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers how he might betray Him and hand Him over to them. 5 They were delighted and agreed with him to give him money. 6 So he consented, and began looking for a good opportunity to betray Jesus to them [at a time when He was] separated from the crowd [because the people might riot or stop them from seizing Him].

Don’t you think that at one time Judas had a sincere heart? Why would he have forsaken all to follow Jesus?

“Then Satan entered Judas.”

Satan had been unsuccessful at tempting Jesus earlier (Matthew 4, Mark 1, Luke 4). So he cooked up a plan to have Him killed. Seriously? This lets me know how ignorant satan really is. And how he will stop at nothing. This idea was his greatest fail. And our greatest win!

I heard a sermon yesterday by Gentry Mangun. He said that after amazing victories in your life, satan will intensify his efforts to attack you. Be on guard! Especially after great victories. He will try to steal your victories.

Satan is not afraid of anyone or anything. He is only dreading hell. And he will stop at nothing to make sure as many folks as possible go with him.

I heard or read something else about how satan will attack you not only in your weak areas but in your strong areas as well. In our strengths, we are confident. So maybe we aren’t on guard like we should be. We need to lay even our strengths down at the foot of the cross and ask Jesus to cover these areas of our lives with His blood, as well as the areas where we struggle.

Does this sound exhausting and worrisome to you? Just lay your worry down at Jesus feet. You have nothing to fear, as long as you lay everything down regularly, and hold tightly to Jesus' hand!

Gentry said that submission to God is the way to have victory over satan. (James 4:7)

How do you submit to God? He laid out 5 steps.

1. Fear Him

2. Fruit of the Spirit

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Gal. 5:22-23

3. Be generous (give even if you can’t afford it)

4. Edify each other (if you hear gossip, stop the conversation or leave)

5. Increase your faith

7 Then came the preparation day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us, so that we may eat it.” 9 They asked Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?” 10 He replied, “When you have entered the city, a man carrying an earthen jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house that he enters. 11 And say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 12 Then he will show you a large upstairs room, furnished [with carpets and dining couches]; prepare the meal there.” 13 They left and found it just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

My thoughts on the above passage are this: Jesus will tell us exactly where to go and what to do and who to approach. All we have to do is ask Him. He will guide us each step of the way if we will only rise early and talk to Him. Okay, maybe you have been asking Him about something and you haven’t heard any direction at all yet. That means wait. Until you hear from Him. He answers in his own time. Not ours.

The Lord’s Supper

14 When the hour [for the meal] had come, Jesus reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him.15 He said to them, “I have earnestly wanted to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves; 18 for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And when He had taken bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup, which is poured out for you, is the new covenant [ratified] in My blood. 21 But listen, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table. 22 For indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined; but woe (judgment is coming) to that man by whom He is betrayed and handed over!” 23 And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this.

Who Is Greatest?

24 Now a dispute also arose among them as to which of them was regarded to be the greatest.25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles have absolute power and lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’ 26 But it is not to be this way with you; on the contrary, the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest [and least privileged], and the [one who is the] leader, like the servant. 27 For who is the greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.

All the disciples could think of after Jesus expressed what was about to happen to Him was who would be the greatest in His kingdom. Selfish ambition, plain and simple.

His answer was not what they were looking for! His answer is rarely what we are looking for! But His answer is the Christian’s guide to life. The greatest is actually the least. The greater one is she who serves. Beautiful.

28 “You are those who have remained and have stood by Me in My trials; 29 and just as My Father has granted Me a kingdom, I grant you [the privilege] 30 that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Those who stand by Christ will reign with Him. This life is a puff of smoke. Vanishing as soon as it appears. The life after this one is the one that we are longing for!

Wow. If we could only get this!!! We would rejoice always, even in our suffering. We get so sidetracked, don’t we?

“Dear, precious Jesus, What a wonder You are. Oh, what a Savior You are. To leave Your throne and come down to endure a lonely life full of nothing but rejection after rejection. For me. Oh how I love You, how I adore You. Yes, I will live for You. Yes, I will serve You, precious Jesus. I desire to live every day in Your presence. In Your name I pray, Jesus, AMEN.”
